Bad TruGlo TFO sight install on G21?

I had TruGlo TFO sights installed on my G21 a few weeks ago at a LGS. The guy who installed them said he wasn't a a fan of the TFOs because the front sight "doesn't stay in place". He claimed this was a problem with the TFOs design since the front sight with fiber optic is long and is only bolted down at the front. I was in a hurry to get the sights installed before a GSSF match and didn't think much about his comment at the time. Now I'veI noticed the front sight on my G21 is very loose and the rear portion of the sight moves from left to right even when touched lightly. Has anyone else had this problem?

I also have TFOs installed on my G20. The G20 TFOs were installed by Neve's in Denver and I've had no problems with the front sight being loose and moving on this gun. I suspect a bad installation on my G21. I really like the TruGlo sights because they offer good visibility in the dark AND they really pop in daylight or indoor light.

I'm curious if anyone has recommendations on how to fix this problem.

I installed them on my gen 4 Glock 23. It took me 3 tries to get the front sight tight enough. I finally got it when I tightened it down very very hard, so much so that I thought I might strip or break the screw. Sight has been solidly on for a couple of months. Be sure to use Loctite. I used red.

Thanks. I think I will go back to the LGS that installed the sights and ask them to try again. The guy who installed the sights said he's seen this problem with all the TFOs he's installed. He said he did use LocTite. I think he doesn't know how to install the sights correctly.

Correction, I used Loctite blue.

I went back to the gunsmith and he retried installing the front sight. It was unsuccessful again. The front sight still was loose and flopped around from left to right with even the slightest touch. The Gunsmith said he used a 3/16 hex driver that he modified. The hex head nut looked a bit stripped after the 2nd installation attempt.

Thirty minutes later I went to the local gun range and told one of the employees there about the problem I was having with the TFO front sight. He grabbed his Glock front sight tool and tightened the bolt for the front sight. So far so good. There is no movement now and I hope it stays that way!

I'm wondering if the Glock front sight tool (vs the standard 3/16 hex driver used by the gunsmith) made the difference?

try a small drop, 1/2 a drop of blue loctite, something that will hold but not like red loctite:)

Sounds like the one gun smith is a bit of a hack.

Did you wait 24 hours before shooting? In the past when I've had NS's installed they've told me to wait that long to let the Loctite cure. I use Loctite and wait 24 hours when I install them myself these days and have never had that problem. I agree with another poster that the Glock front sight tool is worth the money. A regular socket tends to be too fat to stay on the bolt squarely. The Glock tool is also magnetic so the bolt stays in the tool while working.

Quick question: Do you use the blue Loctite only for the thread or also apply it where the upper part of the front sight touches the surface of the slide?

Thank,
Chris

Thanks for your message. Yes, I waited 24 hours. The gunsmith didn't have a Glock sight tool. He used a standard 3/16 socket tool that he modified somehow. He tried twice unsuccessfully to tighten the front sight. The person at the gun range who fixed the problem used a Glock sight tool. Alas, he didn't put Loctite on though. I will get that done and will also order my own. Glock front sight tool.

I draw from a holster once or twice a month. I was drawing from a holster the day before I noticed the loose front sight. I had someone at the range tighten the sight with a Glock tool and all is well for now. Thanks for your message.

Had to be the gunsmith doing it wrong. I've never had an issue using a socket driver.

I was not told to wait 24 hours when my LGS installed mine on my G23 Gen 4. I shot 15 minutes after installation. No problems at all with mine. Maybe I just got lucky.

I had Mepro's installed on my G27 at Palm Beach Shooting Center in South FL, on my G23 at Guns n' Leather in Greenbriar, TN, and on my G26 and G22 at Shooter's Supply in Louisville, KY. All 3 used locktite and all 3 told me to wait 24 hours. So when I installed them on my other Glocks I followed the same procedure. 7 Glocks with night sights and all rock solid.
