Best handgun for self defense/back up.

I must agree that GLOCK should probably follow the market requests for SS 9mm and is not excluded that will come out with it pretty soon.

Still it's true that any gun is better than no gun, but for SD or as back up handgun probably I would prefer a good snubby revolver to a small 9mm single stack.
IMHO

Gunny wouldn't approve of this message! He would say any Glock is better than any revolver.

Seriously, if I want or need to carry something small, I prefer one of my G42's over a revolver. It is faster to reload & I'm more accurate with the G42 than a small revolver. When I don't need/want something small, I'm carrying my G20 or G17.

I think the best backup gun is the ruger LCP, 2nd gen. Trigger is a smooth DA and very reliable. Most people dislike it because it's no range gun. I put a small pachmyr slip on grip and can shoot center mass accurate at 10 yards with no issues one handed. It's a close encounter gun and no war pistol like my G27. It's so small you barely know it's in your pocket or IWB. Mine has been totally reliable, no issues with over 800 rounds through it. Only issue is 380 is expensive.

I like the 42 as well but it's really not a pocket gun when you compare it to the LCP.

Personally, my opinion is the "best" self defense/back up gun is(are) the one(s) you carry, can trust to function properly when required, and are confident in your shooting abilities with.

While my carry choice varies with my duties/tasks for the day (small revolver for work days, .45 or G17 for weekend/holiday), I am proficient enough with each and trust them to do what I need if required.

The best firearm for defense is the one you have with you.

Just my $0.02...

In fact I ment that a good snubby revolver it's better than any "small 9SS". If/when GLOCK will have a 9SS in production will see... :)

It's subjective, like asking what is the best pizza? Currently my pick would the Ruger LC9s Pro model for a compact carry pistol. LCP or Bodyguard if you're wanting smaller.

The LC9s Pro is a great bug choice. Shot one the other day. I wish I kept the target. It's very accurate gun, and the price point is really good. I think they are $380 cash before tax at my LGS.

My opening statement of this thread was simply made to open a debate about GLOCK aficionados.

Still on this topic at the moment I don't feel the need for a 9SS, several years ago in Summer I used to carry a G27 without any issue.

Smith/Wesson bodyguard 38 is ideal CC for me... 14 ounces , nice shooter with 38 P+ JHP , extremely concealable in pocket
Or jacket, n no worries about lack of safety on revolver etc. Ain't going to fire unless u pull that trigger w 10 lbs of squeeze.

I love reading these and seeing how I have evolved over the years. I am 57 and for the past 30 some odd years have carried a Taurus 38 in my car. Always thought a revolver would not let a woman down. Now I have the 42, would love to carry the 19 but too big, and I would not get rid of my old 38 if you paid me. Love a revolver for a woman, i can't mess that up.

Exactly what I ment, You're quite right there, when is needed it's very difficult to mess up with a revolver also for a man believe me.

My first gun I bought when I turned 21, was a S&W 637. I have always loved revolvers. I went to Glock after leaving the mall 10 minutes before a mad man walked in with an ak-47. He killed at random. All I could think of was what if I had to draw and only had 5 shots of .38 special against a semi auto rifle. My Dad had given me a Glock 17 gen.2 for my birthday also. That was the day Glock became my primary and my 637 became my bug. I now often carry the LCR .38 as my bug. I love my LCR!

On duty I carry a G27 as it is the issued BUG to compliment the issued G22 duty weapon. Off duty I tend to carry my LCR .357 in a pocket holster with two speed loaders and my little NAA Pug in a neck holster. When I can't carry my LCR do to clothing, printing or for what ever reason I just carry the Pug.

It's not a pocket pistol, but I love my Gen 4 G27 in FDE with the medium beaver tail blackstrap, Pierce +2 grip extensions, and Gr/Gr TruGlo TFOs mounted on it. I have been carrying it in an DSG Alpha Series OWB holster worn at 4:00. But I just ordered a new home for it, an Alien Gear Cloak 2.0. When it comes I'll post a pic; I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas morning. When I feel the need for something bigger, I carry my 23. I used to carry nothing but a G30SF in .45 ACP (and still do sometimes just for old times sake), but I love the size and feel of my 27. Future accessories for the 27 will include a match grade drop in KKM threaded barrel and may include a fulcrum trigger and a Vickers Tactical slide release.

The Ruger LCR in 9mm is tough to beat. Very compact, nice double action pull and 9mm. Best of all are the moon clips. No need for speed loaders. The moon clips can be loaded and unloaded really fast especially since the 9mm cartridge is short and has a good radius on the bullet. If you get the boot grip the gun dissapears into your pocket with a Sticky Holste or any other pocket holster.

How does 9mm stack up compared to .38 +P ballistically in the LCR?

My bu is a 22 mag NAA mini revolver, I do not really care for revolvers and this is the only one I own. I like it for bu because it is almost non-existent on my person. I also like the ballistics of the 22mag as well.

Since i have an LCP already. I am thinking if I can get my G42 right i might sell it and get the Ruger LC9S Pro.
