So I got some federal self defense 9mm luger ammo today and when I got home I noticed it said "micro" on the top of the box. I'm aware they probably mean for a smaller 9mm pistol but will it shoot fine from my glock 17??

Yes, it will shoot fine. It is designed for use in small pistols but will work fine in your G17.

I did the same thing, I was so excited to find HST rounds I picked up 2 boxes and failed to notice the word micro. These are 150gr rounds. Finding HST rounds in 9mm has not been easy.

I'm sure they will still kill fired out of any size barrel. I decided to let the wife use them in her G19 since I'm hoping with the heavier bullet the recoil would be mild.

On the box it claims "Minimizes felt recoil" but no where do I see FPS ratings so I hope they are not "low recoil" and will cycle in the Gen4. We should be hitting the range sometime today and I will let you know if they cycle.

Always test ammo you plan on using in your EDC weapon(even at $25. a box) you need to know it will cycle.

Ammo is just ammo, the only difference is bullet weight, bullet shape and velocity. This micro stuff is just the latest new magic. You need to function fire any ammo you choose to run in a carry gun, no matter if its a G43 or G34. In this case the micro ammo will shoot faster in a G17 because of the longer barrel. Interesting there are no specs for velocity. For every day practice, just use white box FMJs in 115 gr (the original 9mm weight).

900 FPS sounds like stove pipes in a Gen4.

At the range I use the 115 FMJ White Box as well, still have 500 rounds from my pre-election panic buying, lol,

Hitting the range today. I will attempt to fire them from a Gen4 G19 but have my doubts they will cycle. The normal HST work fine but they really should have labeled these as "low recoil" rounds.

Although Federal may test the 'micro' cartridge differently, my guess is that they use the SAAMI Standard 9mm Luger test barrel, as detailed here.

Bob :)

Really?!?!

The 150s have an IPSC power factor of about 135... almost identical to your 115s. ;)

No problem. no no

Probably a 4" test barrel, so faster in a G34 and slower in a G43. Maybe they hit the power factor in Canadia, Europia, and Asia and down under, but in the US of A, we shoot USPSA not IPSC. Plus IPSC still holds the 170 major floor, where we run 165. Of course it used to be 175 in USPSA, causing many of us go blow up Open Division 9mm Major guns in the quest for speed. The early days were one hell of allot more fun. There was no procedural for not engaging a target (and taking 2 mikes), and no limit on point count. So you loaded up all your mags and hosed the shiite out of the stages, until you ran out of sticks, the targets were scored as shot, and the targets left were just targets left. The first optics were Tasco Pro Points, and you needed to change batteries on every stage. We still wore leather belts, leather pouches and leather holsters. A time long before Glocks, Kydex, coated bullets and electronic shot timers. The greatest thing to come along was the manual progressive Dillon 550 loader.

last time we tried a low recoil round we couldn't get two shots off in a row.
I purchased a box of Hornady critical Defense Lite for a first time female shooter, every round stove piped using the G19.

I loaded 10 rounds of HST 150gr MICRO in a magazine and 10 HST 147gr in another, I'll let you know this afternoon how they cycle. My magazines are numbered so there won't be a mix up.

I've run 115s as slow as 950 fps and 147s as slow as 750 fps in all of my Glocks, including a G19.4, without issue. That's an IPSC power factor of 110... well below the USPSA minor minimum power factor of 125. And, my Glocks (which are stock) function just fine.

That being said, reliably running such low power factor cartridges requires a well functioning pistol and a solid shooting 'frame' from the back of the shoulders through the fingers of a good, firm grip... otherwise, the slide tends to short cycle. Even with my 'stiff' frame and firm grip, cartridges with PFs below about 106 don't reliably cycle my pistols.

With that in mind, note that the 9mm Luger 100 gr FTX® Critical Defense® Lite has a PF of 112... so anything that slows the slide may cause it to short cycle and the pistol to malfunction.

Good luck with your efforts! :goodluck:

Best regards,

Bob :)

The HST micro cycled without issue in the Gen4 G19.

Can't say the WWB 115gr ran flawless and had the usual few hang ups.

We finally got the youngest boy(14yo) to join us, had to pry the Playstation controller from his hands to go. We rented a silenced .22 Ruger and I think he now has a new hobby. The gun shot so silent I wasn't sure it fired.

Glad it went well. :D

Yep! WWB 115s can be 'iffy' sometimes.

Hope the youngest becomes a Grand Master. :rayof:

Thanks for the update! ;)

Yeah, I think his Christmas present will be a Ruger(locked up when not in use)
The last few years his list has been nothing but video games, will be nice to have something different, teach him safety, cleaning of a firearm, etc. Funny thing is I trust him more then the 19 & 22 yo boys.
