That’s about right. Most of my family once lived in East Oakland and shootings were an everyday occurrence.
I live in Jingletown which is home to a lot of artist communities and blue collar workers - it's actually a pretty safe area, shootings are very rare. Several years ago someone was shot and killed outside our building, but that was an outlier, the sad ending of an altercation in a homeless encampment which started out in West Oakland.
East Oakland has always had a reputation. But people like to lump all of Oakland together as a violent city, and that is really not fair or true. There are some really fancy upscale neighborhoods, and some really nice new neighborhoods as well, like Brooklyn Basin by the estuary. I run there every day, really nice next to the estuary. Look at the boats, wave at the Coasties, rollerskate, etc.
