Both should reach sufficient penetration. The HST will accommodate quicker follow up shots.
The oddities of ballistics. Numbers aren't linear.

Underwood 115 gr
1300 ft/sec

OR

Federal HST
124 gr.
1150 ft/sec
364 ft/lb @MuzzleBlast

To me the Underwood ballistics looks better, but not sure about the gr difference vs ballistics in each round.
TIA.
Also your comparing 2 different bullet weights. HST has stood the test of time. 115gr at 1300 fps is going to be harder with follow up shots as posted above. The link below is to an underwood 124gr +P round. It has a Nosler bullet. I prefer the HST bullet to the Nosler bullet.

Wow! I found some Underwood 124 gr. +P+ with gold dots @ 1300 fps!

I don't care much for a lot of reviewers, but Andrew is one of my favorites. Here it is, this is what I found, this is my opinion, so what is your opinion. Make a choice. Not many do that.

The Underwood 115gr load is basically the Federal +p+ BPLE load. Google tht and you will find a lot of info.

Worth the view, but may contradict some "wisdom" that you may or may not have been told. Bottom line, a pistol velocity round has to hit it to break it. Pistol caliber won't get to rifle velocity with very rare exception.

In a self-defense situation, the only thing that counts is a hit. A miss is a miss, and a hit is a hit. Feet per second and pounds of energy don't matter if you miss the target. Always select your ammunition based on the best accuracy. To test for accuracy, I would suggest at least 100 rounds, two hands, slow fire, at 25 yards, each load . . .

If "self-defense" means confronting an armed intruder inside your house at 10-20 feet, either works. If "self-defense" means firing at an unarmed trespasser on your property at say 100 feet, get the cheaper of the two as you will need as much money as possible to pay for the attorney defending you in an assault or man slaughter charge.

"No problem" :) if you like 33.3 yards to test accuracy, (y) find. The only reason to use your handgun is to buy time to get to your rifle . . .
Yea, 100 feet is well within the acceptable SD distance. 50-100 yards will land you in a bind in most cases.
Well, 100 feet in most places. It is still SD acceptable, but may not be Progressive DA, Nooz Anchor, or Karen acceptable.
