I went to order my favorite compass the Francis Barker M73 and the site i know and trust said they are no longer in business! So now I'm on the hunt for 1. In the meantime I ordered a Suunto Clipper. I figured it would go good on my Suunto Core watch which has a digital compass built in. I can also clip it to other things so its useful, but not as useful as a M73. So what are y'all using? Give me more options...lol!
dang, haven't had a compass since I sold my sailboat....I swear by my garmin 60. Amazing gps, lost it on my boat for 3 or 4 years, then found it in a drawer one day, fired it up and it locked on quicker than my base unit with its antenna 50' above the water. Basic direction, sun, moss, lichens, North star...and when that doesn't work, my cell phone
I remember having a compass that was a little wheel with a tire around it as a kid. I just use my phone compass now on those rare occasions that I need one.
I'm not great with GPS units. Technology and I don't get along great. I like having a good compass as things break and batteries go dead, but it may be time I get another GPS also.
I've got that silva on my backpack. Don't forget maps, otherwise it can be "Yeah, I'm headed NW....and??"
The compass on my watch works well and even has an option to mark a destination and keep you on course. I use it to get me back to the house if I get turned around in the woods ,but I've also used it to get me back to a trail when hiking off trail. I got a few apps on my phone, but service gets iffy around here.
Got my suunto compass to go with my Suunto Core watch. It kinda fits on the watch band, but my watch band is pretty thick and wide. So I stick it on my pack. I checked it against several compass apps and my watch and its dead on. For 9 bucks its worth it for sure.
I use my iphone nowadays. I agree, things break, batteries go dead. It’s time for me to get a real compass.
