A fine cartridge it is! Funny how in the world of shooting that a lot of older cartridges get over looked in preference for the latest thing on the market

 

.270 Winchester, 30-30, 45-70 and .45 colt have taken care of anything I might care to hunt. Also got the .30-06 but usually prefer the .270 for longer shots.

 

243WIN in a Model 70, and, even older, 35REM (1906) in a TC Contendor.

 

Acquired a .222 Win (70) in a deal long ago. I kept it for awhile and finally sold it to a guy at work who wanted it really bad. (he paid good)

Hunting in my area (north-central Arkansas) is short- to medium-range due to woods & brush, and nothing bigger than black bear, which are usually sub-300 pounds. For our purposes, a heavy-loaded .357 magnum lever gun would suffice, running 1100-1300 ft/lbs with a lot of factory loads.

If I were somewhere that had longer distances or bigger animals, it would be hard to argue with 30-06.
