Steel case ammo

What is your opinion of steel case ammo? I've never shot anything other than steel ammo through my AK without any trouble but have always been warned against steel ammo through my Glock. Thoughts and reasons?

I've been told that steel shells expand when heated up which could damage your barrel over time. I never shoot anything other than brass after being told that.
I haven't shot it in my glock but I run Wolf steel case ammo ALL the time in my AR and never not once had any problem or malfunction with it.

I get wolf in 5.56 at half the price do it only makes since to use it for range ammo. I've heard with the AR it can wear out your extractor faster but at what you save on ammo a $10 dollar extractor doesn't make a difference to me.
That's the basic reason I ask. Steel case 10mm is the only 10 readily available at the LGS. And is obviously much cheaper. But I have also heard rumor that steel casing can damage your gun, but never heard exactly how or why
I use steel in my SKS for cost purposes , but brass in my other guns . I'm going to start reloading so this is a no brainier lol

I can't speak on the glocks but I've talked to guys who have ran 1000s of steel through there glock no problem but my AR shows no sign of extra wear and it doesn't run awhole lot dirty in 5.56 them brass federal 5.56
I shoot at 3 different inside ranges and they ask you everytime if you are using steel case Ammo. They will not allow it in their ranges. Quote: We had too many near serious accidents! Not worth it.

You threw me off with your Avatar change Dutchs lol

That is a good point most in door ranges don't let you shoot steel. I personally shoot outdoor 90 percent of the time but it's something to consider if you shoot in door more or just stock up on both.
I have ran tulammo through my Glocks with no problem also run brass just depends on price and availability! IMO Winchester value pack is way dirtier than tulammo....
I've been told by indoor range no steel as well. But I know it also has something to do with them selling the brass that is left behind

Point well taken!! Definitely could be capitalism at work!!
I ran a few boxes of Tula through my 34. No problems, and it was actually fairly accurate!
A gun that won't run ANY factory ammo isn't a gun worth owning.

the indoor range here there a sign that says leave your brass if you rent our guns. but if you bring your own they ask you to take it with you are throw it away?

Great point!!
Much of the steel cased ammo has steel core bullet so it tears up their back stops. I've expeimented with reloading steel cases too and the range said no because they said the cases mar/scratch the clear herculite glass that seperates stations. Also, as mentioned earlier the brass is recycled and it might as well be sorted at the beginning. Thinking that way, they might as well turn in the steel as scrap too.

Thanks shaker! That's what I really wanted to know, the actual reason people say no steel, and those people are only the indoor ranges. I knew it had something to do with them recycling the brass and didn't want steel casing mixed in, but was unaware of the other problems you mentioned.

The general opinion seems to be that the ammo works fine in the gun, the indoor ranges just don't like it because it could produce a headache for them.
I've shot around 1200 rounds thru my G26 Gen 4 with about 500 rounds of that being Tula. Never had any issues! IMO, it's not any dirtier than WWB or Federal. I've been having a hard time getting it at Walmart! They're always out! I've seen the bulk prices, but after adding in shipping, there's not much savings. So, I just continue to buy it by the box.
