I have recently came across a thread about the .45 acp Solid Defense X (SDX) Barnes 185 gr HP +P being the best .45 HP round out there: http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=312456 http://store.chencustom.com/45_ACP_SOLID_DEFENSE_X_SDX_Barnes_185_gr_HP_P_s/78.htm Do any of you out have any experience with the round? I know it is on the pricey side but can you really put a price on your life? Would this be a good choice for a reliable self defense round? I really like the Winchester 230 gr FMJ round but there are a lot of conflict whether its a good self defense round or not. I know it will cost a lot to see if it will function flawlessly with my glock 21 (putting a couple hundred rounds thew it) but other then that it will just be loaded in my mags on stand by for HD. Thanks in advance!
The only thing I've heard about the all-copper Barnes X bullets that is negative is that they have a tendency to yaw and veer off-course once contacting a barrier. Yes, they do penetrate barriers well, but do not seem to continue on a straight path after doing so, in the cases I've seen. I believe Dr. Gary Roberts had a tidbit mention of this, and said they merit further testing. Overall, they are considered to be an awesome bullet. Personally I like 230gr. bullets, but will give these more consideration after more street info comes out. I have heard that they are a bit on the low-recoil side, which I am a fan of when possible.
Give this a read: http://www.brassfetcher.com/40S&W%20JHP%20performance%20against%20Bone%20Simulant%20and%20Ballistic%20Gelatin.pdf I found it interesting that the Federal HST was not included in that test, rather the much older Federal Hydra-shok was. Same with the SXT -- older design. And why use the Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel out of that length of a Glock barrel?
