I have a S&W 317 AirLite .22 revolver which shoots right to my point of aim, which is strange for me since I usually pull to the left if I'm not focusing on my fundamentals. After adjusting the rear sights all the way to the left, it still shoots a little to the right.

Also, it has a tendency to spit something (powder or lead?) on me when I shoot.

Is this a sign my revolver has a timing problem or is it just user error?

You may have a timing issue. Is it shaving material off of the bullet coming out of the cylinder gap? I had issue with the cylinder not releasing. Had a repair center somewhat close and had it repaired free. I'd contact Smith & Wesson and see if you have a repair center near you. Or take it to a revolver smith.
