Passing the Baton

Recently on a Trip to our capital city (Adelaide ) I took the opportunity to visit my Barrel Guys workshop .I dropped off a .22 Hornet Barrel to be reamed out to K Hornet and ordered a 7x57 barrel ! I must admit to being a little annoyed about the 7mm as a couple of years ago I had what was then a 7x57 rechambered for 8x57 ! I sold the rifle to my Granddaughter not long after and on a recent hunting trip she had the opportunity to fire a 7x57 Mauser and fell in love with the round ! She decided to have her rifle rebarreled back to 7 mm ! Oh if I'd known ! I think the 7x57 suffers as a lot of shooters still have barrels with the original throat which is that deep it would put Linda love lace to shame, as the round used to use those long projectiles! Set up properly for modern projectiles the little 7mm is a grand round !
I was going to fit the barrels myself but have decided to teach her how to fit and headspace both barrels ! She has leant how to bed actions and float barrels and crown muzzles ! I think it's important to pass these skills on as I won't be around forever ! Her elder brother joined the Army and is training to be an armourer which will give him the grounding to become an Gunsmith ! I know my way around a lathe and milling machine but I wouldn't call myself an tradesman by any means and my skills as a gunsmith have been handed down to me by a family member some years ago! I'm hoping that both kids will continue on that pathway

My first hunting rifle as a kid was a Model 94 30-30. Shortly after that I got a Ruger M77 in 7x57 (old style). It was a good shooter. I wish I had kept both.

I don't care what any body says both the 7x57 and especially the 30-30 are grand cartridges ! With all the offerings on the market , the old 30-30 gets overlooked then the new generation 'discover' it and it becomes popular again ! I've had a 94 Trapper for years

My dad had two old 303 British Enfields. Later I reloaded for that caliber and found neck sizing was best for that Military Surplus rifle.

When I graduated from Boot Camp I got myself a brand new Winchester M94 30-30. I found that was a easy caliber to reload for and the Speer Manual had two reduced power loads. The Speer 100 grain SP and Speer 110 grain HP.

There is a myth about the Lee Enfield action ! It is claimed that being a rear locking action you must full length resize every time you reload ! As you well know it's a old wives tale ! I argued for years with my father on the subject ! We were out on our range one day and I made a point of having a Lee Hand loading tool and used the same 10 cases reloading after shooting them on the spot in front of him ! His answer to this was that I had a one in ten thousand Mk111! I walked up to a solid tree and beat my head against it!

My best friend I partnered with in Law Enforcement, is a double distinguished shooter, was a member of the USMC rifle team, competed in many forms of competition and is as avid into everything gun as I am. We would hang out with his Dad and a shooting or firearm question would come up. My buddy would give his answer and his dad would completely dismiss it and ask me. 9 times out of 10 I’d give the same answer but his dad would act like I was the Oracle.
It would burn my buddy up. Gave me a chuckle.
I guess it’s inherent that fathers think their kids are idiots.😂

I think you have a point there ! I'm 63 and my 92 year old Dad constantly reminds me I'm an idiot! Amongst other things ! Thing is I can't argue, he's forgotten more than I've learnt

I second the motion. Actually we should have a Poll on the subject.

I’m 42, & my dad is the same way. I think it’s part of the father & son relationship.

My Granddaughter has decided she wants to build her first rifle! I have a few Martini cadet actions and she wants one of those to base the rifle on ! There is a cartridge that is still available over here in virgin brass form (.222 rimmed ) She want's to build a 6mm or 257 /222 rimmed ! Can't say I agree but it's her project ! I'd personally just fit a rimless ejector for a standard .222 !

Maybe she can build the one that Vince likes and then make her own choice.
MATE!!!!!!!!! I love my Granddaughter dearly ! I am not above staking family members over a bull ant's nest covered in honey ,if they dare to test my wrath ! My wife brought a savage in that calibre some time ago ,thinking I was only joking ! For 2 months after she sold it! She was still frightened to go out after dark , got somebody she didn't like to start her car for her and called the bomb squad every time a package turned up in the mail !!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I have thrown down the gauntlet to Betty ! I have acquired a rimless extractor for a Martini cadet action ! But!!!!! It's a 30 M1 version ! Her task when she has the knowledge is to use it as a reference to manufacture her own in .222 Rem !
