The 21 is quite pleasant to shoot, but definitely not an ideal carry pistol. Many people (myself included) consider the G19 to be THE universal pistol. If I could only have one gun, it would be a 19.
Worm asked for nothing below .40. Try not to confuse a newbie by recommending a gun he already knows he doesn't want: a 9mm.
Worm:
Full sized:
21 = .45 double stack 13+1 rounds
22 = .40 double stack 15+1 rounds
Compact
23 = .40 double stack 13+1 rounds
Sub compacts
27 = .40 double stack 9+1 with extension options
30 = .45 double stack 9+1 with extension options
36 = slimline subcompact .45 single stacked 6+1, Im unfamiliar with extension options.

With the 27 and 30 you can get mag extensions that make the grip more like a compact, and you can even use full sized magazines with a grip sleeve that wraps the exposed magazine and gives the feel of a full sized grip, all with the short barrel of the sub.
After those, there is the .357 Sig, which is a badass little round, and there is the .45 GAP which I won't speak to because I'm unfamiliar with it and don't want to negatively influence your decision.
I own a G30, with 10 round factory mags and pinky grip extensions: I have huge hands and it feels good to me. See my avatar photo.
