I have a 1917 Colt service revolver in 45acp and have been looking for a 1911 in the same caliber but they've just gotten way too overpriced, even the import copies. While browsing the Armslist site for listings in Wyoming I happened to find this S&W 4566. It's on the other end of the state in Sheridan (I'm in Cheyenne) but the seller is asking a decent pre panic buying price for it and is tossing in four mags, two holsters, and around 300 rounds of ammo with it so tomorrow I'm making the 325 mile drive up to Sheridan.
The 45acp is my favorite handgun round and this has the features I like most on my 9mm Ruger P89; hammer fired, single/double action, with a de-cocker safety so I'll have a 45acp auto loader with the features I like most about my P89 in a relatively small package that resembles a 1911.
The grandson likes the 45acp round but isn't a revolver fan so I think he'll like this combination. Of course he won't get it until I croak or become to feeble to shoot :) but between his M19 and this he'll be set up nicely.

That’s a sweet 45. When I looked at the pictures I was amazed at how much it looks like my S&W 469. It’s the first pistol I ever bought. Got it on my 21st B-day a few decades ago. Still have it.
Congratulations on a nice purchase!

Thankee. A friend of mine in Denver also bought a 469 as his first pistol. Sweet shooter.
S&W stays with designs and features that work. They improve and modify them for different firearms but you can see stuff they introduced decades ago still being used in their modern day firearms.
My S&W model 10-10 38spl is a perfect example of this. S&W has been making versions of this revolver since 1899 because it still works and works well. :)

It looks similar to my S&W CS9.

We should almost start a gen.2 & 3 S&W semi auto thread. There are so many variations of them!

I have a blued 469, & used to have the model 59 also. They are/where my only blued models.

Since I wasn't real happy with either holster than came with the pistol I got this Bucheimer off Ebay. It's made for a Colt Commander but after I trimmed just a smidge of leather off for the rear sight it fits the S&W like a glove.

It's the Pacemaker M-35 model.
Nice simple perfect fitting black leather holster. What's not to like, right? :)
Next are Tritium illuminated sights for the S&W and the Ruger P89DC.

Thanks. I checked out their website and saw that they carry the Bright and Tough sights for both my S&W and my Ruger P89.
Both pistols have nice sights but with small dots so those would improve things greatly for my old eyes. :geek:

Range Report

I took the S&W 4566 out to the indoor range and ran a couple hundred rounds of factory and reloads through it today. It is one "sweet" shooting pistol.
The trigger reset is extremely short and very light so it took a bit of adjustment but after I got the feel of it I was able to run quick sets of double taps very easily and accurately.
I took my Ruger P89DC along to give it some exercise and between the two of them had a great time. The Ruger is a fine shooter too but the S&W definitely has the better trigger.
The only improvement both of them could really use are a set of Trigicon sights. On the wish list. :)

I really love shooting any of those gen.3 S&W’s. I might even carry some of them, if they didn’t all have magazine safeties. The trigger pull, & reset is exactly how you described. Sounds like you enjoyed shooting it. Congrats again!

Thankee. :) My S&W 422, which I bought new when they came out in the 80s and have shot extensively, has the mag safety too so I'm used to it though I can see where they could present a problem for some folks.
This was my 1st visit to the county indoor range and I was very pleased with it. Warm, well lighted and ventilated, and staffed with friendly folks. I think I'll get a yearly membership so I'll have a winter shooting option.
I like the outdoor range where I have a membership for long range shooting and the Hell on Wheels cowboy action competition they host each year but it gets a might chilly in the winter when the temps are at the freezing level and the winds are howling. 🥶

Man that’s a sweet package. My advice is if you want more magazines. They are getting scarce. 1 1006 mag is almost $100.
The mags I found on Ebay weren't OEM so I kept looking and found two OEM mags at the Gun Auctions site and managed to get both pretty cheaply. I also got two mags from ProMag that have worked fine so far.
This gives me eight 8 rounds mags or 64 rounds of 45acp which, as I don't anticipating any firefights, is plenty. :)

Range Report #2.
I put a Swampfox Kingslayer optic with a green ring and dot on the grandson's M19, big thanks to 3404speed, and we took it out to the range this afternoon and put 100 115gr factory FMJ rounds through it.
Of course we had to tinker with it a bit to get it zeroed but the optic creates an amazing sight picture and by the 3rd mag he had it pretty well centered and by the 5th mag he was holding palm size slow fire groups and chest size quick double tap groups at 5 yards. Not bad for the first time. As with everything, the more practice he puts in the better he'll get.
Since he'll get one or the other (his choice) when I croak or quit shooting we also took along my 9mm Ruger P89DC and 45acp S&W 4566 to do some comparison shooting. He's shot the Ruger before but not the S&W. After running 100 rounds through each and keeping very nice groups he's definitely leaning toward the 45acp. He loved the S&W trigger reset.
While both are heavier and bulkier then his Glock on the other hand neither are picky about ammo and will cycle just about anything you put in them. To me that's an important feature.
But compared to the Glock with it's "Bright & Tough" Trijicon sights and now the Kingslayer optics they both suffer in low light shooting conditions so I'm going to put a set of the "Bright & Tough" illuminated sights on both of them.
