So, I took a class on armed security last weekend. I've been doing security(armed and unarmed)for almost a decade, and I thought it was time to make it official. The class was out at Ben Avery shooting range, and the instructor was from Frontsight out in Vegas. The instructor was good, and I had a great time even though some of the tactics taught were a little out dated IMO. I have to admit though, the malfunction drills were great! Definetly adding them to my training. What I saw out on that range was pretty scary though. I couldn't believe the amount of negligent behavior on the range. People had NO muzzle discipline(had 2 weapons pointed at me), couldn't listen to range commands, couldn't seem to listen to the courses of fire, didn't come prepared to run their weapon all day, and on and on!! It got me thinking, I see these people that carry their weapon everyday, and had NO IDEA how to properly use it. It's crazy to think people out there just get a gun, carry it sometimes, and think they are going to be able to use it effectivly in a dynamic shooting scenario. Now, I'm a bit of a nerd as are most of us when it comes to our firearms, but I am a true believer in being a master of your craft, and not being one of those idiots. We have been given an opportunity to be responsible citizens, and carry a weapon to ensure the safety of ourselves, and our loved ones. With this opportunity comes responsibility. I believe if we decide to use our right to carry a weapon, it's our resonsibility to make sure we do it safely, and train so that we're an asset to society, and NOT a liability. For the inexperienced people on this forum that carry and use a firearm, take this thread seriously. Know your weapon! Know how to field strip, complete breakdown, funtion of different parts, and so on! We all need to have an intimate relationship w our firearms! MASTER YOUR CRAFT,AND DON'T BE ONE OF THOSE IDIOTS. Ok ok, I feel better now that I vented

P.s. I'm gonna brag a little bit. I had a couple really good shooters(including ex FBI of 14 years) in the class, and I got top shot. I was on point yesterday!!!

Agree with your post. Too many people disregard or just don't safely handle guns. Maybe we need a mandatory gun safety class in High Schools, wait a minute drivers education hasn't worked out all that well. Congrats on top shot. By "making it official" does your state not require licensing for security?

This is why I rarely go to the range to have fun or goof off. Granted I will do this, but this is in addition to my weekly training visit, not in place of. Holster drills, who/sho training, and accuracy drills at different ranges are typically what I try to do when I'm at the range. If I really need to blow off some steam then I load the 33 rounder mag up and rapid fire it off. However even doing that I still try to keep center mass.

I believe just for contract security you need a license.

AZ only requires licenses if you are hired by a security provider that provides security for a third party. I do my contracts, so far, directly to the company/business/person that I provide services to, thus a license is not needed. Looking into getting one though as most places are hiring security companies now… Who did you do your class through?

Texas Security Board is very stringent. There are security "academy's " just about everywhere in the state.

true words there jmiles, too many clowns out there that treat their weapon like squirt guns. I am fortunate to be able to go to the range during the week when most people are at work and the range is about empty.

When learning navigation I was taught, "When two ships are in sight of one another, there is a chance for a collision."

Same applies to people handling a weapon, except the numbers are cut in half! A along time member of my local club I can say we too have the same problems but just not on the same level as the general public ranges. You have to be on-guard all the time you are handling a firearm and be diligent to what others around you are doing as well.

Training is only half the game.

Four rules of guns safety. If you cannot follow them, you should be kicked out of the range. Simply put.

Now, there are a lot of untrained people that need the training like what you just went through, to understand what to needs to be done...thus, it's called training. I just wish they were in beginner classes before stepping up to something like what you went through.

Florida has some pretty strict laws about security guards armed or unarmed you have to be licensed and recent annually !

On another note I have seen some amazing ( not good ) things at the range. Really kind of scares me to go and I leave if it's is or gets busy

Here in AZ guard cards are good for two years, armed (licensed or not) must have 16 hours training annually.

More than occasionally I have to restrain a tendency to rant on this subject. have to say that folks at both clubs I belong to are very good but I have run into more than a few serious knuckleheads at public ranges. The second thing that drives me crazy are the people who take a single CCW class and figure they're ready to rock. I"m betting more than half of them will never get their guns out of the holster. We get a chance to promote mastery of craft here, which is great, though we're preaching to the choir to some extent. Wish there was more awareness in general. Good post, though. Reminders about safety are always a good thing.
