Is the current ammo situation really improving?

I’ve been closely watching the sale of ammo online from a multitude of different large suppliers the past few weeks, mainly 9mm fmj which seems to be the unicorn. The best price I saw was 0.38 cents a round for aluminum case and 0.39 - 0.40 cents for brass. Those are prices for 1,000 round cases and excludes tax and shipping. All said and done that is still more than double for what it sold for pre-madness. I’ve seen the worst prices upwards of 0.46 - 0.54 cents a round for the same exact ammo.

For the lower priced ammo I thought it was a positive sign that It was readily available and not selling quickly. There were counters for available stock which I checked daily, multiple times. Some days it barely moved. I figured that availability and slow sales would eventually drive down the price and we were finally heading in the right direction.

However this past Friday everything in that 0.38 - 0.40 cent range sold out. It could of been a single buyer or just a few buyers and not a definitive broad barometer of the situation. Then I thought, maybe the sellers were playing games, purposely giving the illusion of low/zero stock to cause a panic to jumpstart sales. I really don’t want believe that though. What are you guys observing in your areas?

Availability is better and prices are coming down a little. It'll still be a while until I'm a buyer.

Things seem to be catching up, a little. Prices are down a bit and availability is getting better.
Prices may never be what they were pre pandemic/election/riot season, but who knows 22 got cheap for a while after being non existent for a few years.
When it gets acceptable to you, buy. Don't worry about those who won't touch it until it gets $X.xx, you aren't them or in their situation. I would purchase cautiously for a while, but that is just me. I don't "need" much for the time being.

I’m able to find 22LR for about 8 cents a round. But it’s a complete ammo desert for 9mm, 380, 38 special. I’m lucky to find that once every 3 weeks on a shelf. So local stock is still a major problem.

I'm regularly able to buy .22lr Federal Automatch for 5.3 cents a round at Walmart pretty regularly.

Academy has almost zero .22lr except for the Norma stuff which is about 20 cents a round and they can't give it away. Ammo guy there says they have a storeroom full of it.

Had quite a bit of Federal 9mm 115 grain last week for about 40 cents a round. I'm not interested at that price. I've got plenty for SHTF and will just keep range shooting my Glock 44 22 caliber until then.

Just came off ammoseek and a few others. It looks like 0.40 cents a round for bulk 9mm reloadable brass (1,000 rds) seems to be the best price. It also appears many are perfectly comfortable paying that as stock is dwindling. With tax and shipping one is looking at $450 shipped! Dang.

Seems that Academy stores in North Texas get their deliveries on Tuesday and Thursday every week. I’ve been checking lately. I’ve been buying 9mm at $17.99/50 FMJ brass. I’m out on other 9 priced higher which is the majority. .223 is just stupid priced IMO at $12.99/20FMJ and up.
I don’t know how long the stuff is lasting on the shelves as I’m just in the stores about an hour after opening on Tuesday and Thursday.
Other shops I’ve checked out lately are just completely scalping people or out of stock.

I'm seeing increased availability, with slight price reductions. I don't think suppliers are playing games by pulling their supplies, but that's just me with no evidence one way or the other. Seems to me they're going to make more money selling ammo compared to removing it.
I use AmmoSeek regularly too. It's a pretty good way to get good prices but I think there are online sources that they don't include in their searches.

Hit Academy this morning. I bought PMC (haven’t seen that brand in pistol calibers for some time) brass 9 FMJ 50 rd./ $17.49.
I got 4 boxes, which is their limit on handgun ammo.

Yea, just came back from checking my Academy. ZERO 9mm of any kind at any price. The only 22lr was the same Norma at 20 cents a round and they had several hundred boxes on the shelf. The guy that I know that works there said they had a store room full of it and can't get rid of it. I told him I'll buy a bunch of that for 5cents a round someday and he said, "yea, you probably will"

So, went next door to Walmart and bought another thousand rounds of Federal Automatch. They have jacked the price up on that by a dollar a box since last week, so now it costs 5.6 cents a round instead of 5.3 cents ! I believe I'll just keep buying that every time I see it.

This morning I was able to get a five box limit of Armscor 9mm 115gr FMJ (brass) @ $14.99/50. I just happened to be there when the truck pulled in and was first in line. The crazy thing is most of that delivery were 500 rd cases of Winchester white box which they could not sell because it’s on recall.

Was there when the delivery came in (yesterday) at Acworth Cabela's with a lot of $0.40/rd Blazer 115gr FMJ and slightly more expensive Federal 115gr. Had some new .40 come in (which is a bit strange). Also had 9mm, .40, .45 SD ammo from Hornady, etc. Not great, but it's coming back somewhat. Local range/gun store is similar price with more options.
Seeing adds that he prices are down from say Feb.March price highs, that said the shelves at the LGS are still bare.

I used to always get the WWB 200-round value pack (in .40 S&W) for $65.00 at Academy, but I haven’t in a while because the same value pack is now $100.00.

We could always get the WWB 200 round boxes at Academy for under $40. Could buy in 1000 round orders from TargetSportsUSA.com for $169 and free shipping.

I am new so bought a couple of thousand recently at around 44-45 cents each plus tax and shipping. I need it so got it. Also, are you so sure that prices will come down more than a few cents in the next few years if the Biden plan ends up really igniting inflation? Recent CPI numbers are already disturbing. Think how people in the mid 70s said, gas prices will come down soon. Not till the mid 80s did things settle down.
