I own 3 1911s and 2 Glocks. It's comparing apples to oranges. I love them both.
There was a statement about a "reliable" 1911 costing 3x more... My 'gently used' Rock Island has never failed and only cost $400. It's a completely different animal. Completely stripping it down does require some patients, a couple of recommended tools (punches and an armorers block), written instructions from the web, and a YouTube video. But I have yet to meet someone who doesn't like getting down Into the guts of their firearm.
I wouldn't recommend going nuts with a Kimber for your first one.
You can own a Ferrari and a Prius. If you don't take them out and practice driving it, it's not going to work that well for you.
