Does open carry make you a target?

15126 Views 76 Replies 47 Participants Last post by  fireman5
i recently started to open carry out side of my home. when i go out with friends and such even for simple things like grocery shopping i bring my g22 with me and open carry.

now a friend of mine brought this to my attention, she said it makes her feel weird when i carry because so many people notice and either stare or often times take a double take.
she then proceeded to tell me she feels like if something where to happen we would be targets because i already have shown that i have a gun.

my question is does anyone else feel this to be true? i have thought about it before but feel the benefits of carrying out way the added risk of showing i have it. i am sure this is a topic often talked about amongst those who do carry both cc and open.

i personally due notice of course those who stare or double take but i just ignore them and go on with my shopping and try not to show them any reason to feel threatened by me simply because i have a gun. i dont carry as a image of power or control i simply do it to protect me and mine, god forbidding it ever came down to it.

thanks for the input sorry for the long post :D

The law only past about 2 years ago. So its fairly new...alot of AZ'ers dont know.
Oh it is?? That would explain why I didn't know about it 10 years ago when I was 18 lol.

Well keep in mind that there are diferent type of targets to...

You may intimidate some criminals and attract other type by open carrying... and if you attract the type of criminals that wont mind if you have a gun, then be sure they will shoot you no matter what, then you lose the element of surprise because they are the ones that going to use it.

In my country Open Carry is illegal, and there are some places where if you Open Carry people are going to come from your back and put a bullet on your head just to steal your gun...
What country do you live in Danielgt?

It sure is, my highschool reunion just passed lol.
I just don't do it even though I could in my state. I don't have anything to prove, I don't like the attention it brings to me in public, I don't like thinking that yes I could be a target, I don't like what a lot of people think of those who do, I don't have retention training therefore if someone was hell bent on taking my weapon by surprise while OC'ing, they probably could......i could go on a little.

Now if I lived in an area where most residents did in fact OC, I'm quite sure I might have a different mind set.

You should go to Texas where you leave your firearm at the door when you enter bass pro shop..that's garland, tx. I was shocked to see how many people was carrying there when I saw how many guns were in the crate.

There is no OC in Texas either...

Bass Pro is anti carry period. They want to sell you a gun but don't want you to legally carry one concealed or otherwise in their stores.

Saw a sign as I entered that said something about checking them in at the front. I just keep walking so I didn't read it fully.

Did not mean to go off topic.

OC will be legal here in OK in a few weeks and I'm still deciding if I ever will.
I've been OC'ing daily for almost the last two years.

No problems worth mentioning and no problems with the citizens.

I"ve always OC'ed while on vacation in the multitude of states that allow it and once again, no problems at all.

As I do this daily, I don't have a lot of the "reluctance" that people who are new to open carry (or have never open carried) have.

It's just a normal part of my daily routine and that's it. Nothing special. Just a gun where a cell phone would be on a citizen.

AD (and it much more comfortable than IWB carry for sure!)
I open carry, mainly due to comfort. But I don't open carry at malls or other places where sexually frustrated moms will be at.. Lol.
I'm in Az.
I live in phila, pa.... Open carry is legal in pa but here in Philly you'll get hassled for it by ppd. There's some people that still do open carry but I choose not to for the fact the way these people are these days they see you walking with a gun, they're going to try and get it from you. I also don't open carry because I think if **** hit the fan and I had to pull my gun the threat would be surprised.!
We will find out November 1st here in Oklahoma! Open carry becomes law. I will still carry the same way, OWB, without the worry of exposure or printing.

I've been counting down the days for months now...
We can open carry, but it seems the only ones I see are the really young ones doing it. Not sure if its to be cool, or screw with the cops. Not for me, I want surprise on my side!!
In Nevada is it legal to OC except in places that state otherwise like State land. I do like the idea of open carry because of comfort but chose to wait for my CC permit. Recently a man was shot by Metro for OC in a Costco. Reports say that employees called the police and when the man exited the store he was shot. There is a lot of things that do not add up about this story but I believe that it comes down to the fact that citizens did not know our state laws and I do not want to be mistaken as well. I do not put myself into areas where I feel that I could be harmed if I did choose to OC or if someone decided to steal my pistol. It really just depends in what each individual is comfortable with.

I've been to Bass Pro in Grapevine Texas. I had to check my guns and they put locks on them until you get to their indoor range. If they had a 30.06 sign I didn't see it. I go to CABELA'S regularly and have always carried concealed.
Good to see a variety Of states that allow OC & CC Fl. Allows CC for those with permits and Public OC is not allowed unless LEO on duty. A few sheriff said they prefer the ccw to carry and don't like the OC. Because it could be intimidating depending on the individuals appearance and context.

I cc in bass pro all the time, the sign that says "all firearms must but unloaded and checked in at front" has range printed on top of the sign so that doesn't pertain to me when I'm shopping, if I I'm going to the range then I check my firearms in. I took my ccw class in bass pro and my instructor said we could carry concealed in there.

Good to see. I was disconcerted by the Blaze post.
