Hello all. I am a new Glock owner (haven't even received it yet).

I bought a Glock 19 Gen 4. It will be my first handgun. I am excited to get it and get to know the handgun.

I am currently living 33 miles above the Arctic Circle in Alaska. Ammo is expensive so I try to buy what I can in Anchorage. I am heading home now with 650 rounds. We will see how long that lasts. We still have snow and ice on the ground, so not sure when I will be able to start shooting.

Any suggestions for a new handgun owner and Glock owner? I have not purchased a holster yet, not sure what I want. Was thinking of a shoulder holster as I will be out driving on the tundra this summer and may be more comfortable.

What about ammo? I just looked for the cheapest available to start. Right now it will be all target practice and getting to know the handgun.

Thanks
Matt

Hello There & Greetings- I'm sure you'll enjoy it when it arrives. You might try the internet for ammo, & there are some ammo manufacturers in Alaska, I'm not sure what calibers are available though. I've been up there in the Military, and the shoulder holster would be my choice. Exposed metal can get really cold to the touch, hate to get your hand stuck to the slide trying to rack it. A warm weapon is a happy weapon. There are some custom holster mfgs up there that make really nice chest rigs for hunting pistols.
Enjoy the G19, they are loads of fun to shoot, and take some pics if you have a chance, those are always nice. Good shooting to ya.

Welcome to the Glock Forum! Stick around, you will like it here!

Suggestions: go shoot it. A lot. Then you can address what you like and don't like. In holsters, I would assess how you move every day (in a vehicle, climbing a mountain, etc). You want the easiest access! Congrats on your new purchase.

Here's a link to Diamond D in Wasilla. I have one of their Guides Choice holsters for my S&W 500. Very well made & comfortable, you can rig it several different ways. Here's the link. http://www.diamonddcustomleather.com/Photo_Gallery.php. The vid on the site pretty well explains how the holsters they make work, and what the advantages are. Lots of choices out there.

Hello, Matt (ArcticCircleRN), and WELCOME to the Forum!

You are, I believe, only the second Member to join us from Alaska (Member ODGreen being the other)... perhaps you can exhange notes and share on location-specific information as far as parts and ammunition sources and the like.

Again, WELCOME!

If you are looking at a leather rig, here's another vote for the Diamond D Guides Choice. It keeps the gun out of the way for riding 4-wheeler, snowmachine, etc yet easy to get to when you need it. Steve

Hey Matt, I'm over in Fairbanks and get ammo from a few local vendors. Let me know if you ever need something a bit more local. I can always UPS ground over a few boxes.
