I don't think the XDs would be any worse then a G36. After shooting my recently acquired G30 I'm of the opinion that the 45acp isn't all that bad, more of a heavy shove then that crazy muzzle flipping deal you put up with if you've got a 40cal,LOL.
I actually enjoy my G30 but didn't like the Beretta PX4 Storm in 40cal nearly as much. Even when I switched to the 180gr sub-sonic stuff it still was more then I liked but the ol' 45acp is a lot of fun to shoot.
You could probably get into an XDm 3.8 for the same or less then the new XDs and have a more multi purpose firearm IMHO, or just do like I did and go G30, they're readily available on the used market for about $450 or there abouts and there's plenty of mods for em' since they've been out for a while. As always, JMHO, YMMV.

They DO make it in 9mm. My wife has the XD9 subcompact and honestly, it shoots smoother than my 26.
Really sweet little guns. I highly recommend renting one if you have the option, think you might like it.

I was under the impression that the XDS is a new gun. A single stack .45 ACP. The XD and XDM have been around for sometime and they do come in 9mm and various other calibers. I could be wrong, so don't take my word in stone.

I read this review last night from G&A.
It's dated March 2012 and they speak about coming out with the 9mm soon.
Curious how it compares To the other Springfield 9mm's ^^ ^^

There was an statement by Springfield back in Feb, on the release of the XDS in 9mm & 40. They just said "soon". Which is currently being interpreted as before the end of the year. Meanwhile there is hot debate as to what a 9mm, or .40 will actually look like. Mag capacity & so on. For now, no one really knows, & there is a firestorm of guessing going on. I'd like to shoot the XDS, but I'm a bit biased about .45's, I pretty much like them all.

Man the XDS looks great and slim but only five round magazine.. Still nice pistol though fir .45 ACP with the red fiber front site stock.

5+1 doesn't sound like a lot until you consider that a lot of folks carry around 5 shot J-Frames for SD so you're actually getting one more round in a large bore, fight stopping caliber. Still, I think I'd rather just get a Glock G36, they've been out for a while so all the "new" has worn off of em' so you can pick up one for a decent price. The XDs, being a new gun will sell for a premium for a while so you'll not find any real deals on em' just yet.

You could always just go for a s&w m&p shield. It come in 9mm and I'm hearing good things but I'm going to stick with my G23 and Ruger sr9c for now
