I've never really looked at it as stockpiling really. It's just what my guns run on. So I buy, or handload the best, and cheapest stuff I can find, because the prices always go up, and sometimes wages don't keep pace. I just shot up the last of a batch I loaded in Feb of 1976. At that time I was using Speer Semi Jacketed Hollowpoints, which were pretty high end. But there are better bullets available now, so I'm shooting up all the old stuff. My high end hand loads of yesteryear shed their jackets & about a third of the front end, essentially becoming 180 or so grain solids. That's not acceptable, so I use them for target practice & replace them with better, fresher stuff. It will keep a long time though, in airtight ammo cans. No misfires, 36 years old.
Here's a pic of what you don't want, jacket separation.
Note the $5.00 price tag, that was for 50 primed new brass, circa '76
