Streamlight TLR-7 sub – A New Light for subcompacts

Until recently, not many subcompact carry guns came equipped with rails. Because of this, some people either carried a larger handgun, or opted to have no light. However, with the introduction of pistols like the SIG P365, Springfield Armory Hellcat, and Glock 43X and 48 MOS models, that has changed. A need for subcompact lights has emerged and Streamlight has answered. Introducing the TLR-7 sub.

The TLR-7 sub uses a clamp system that is designed to fit railed subcompact handguns. It needs no tools to quickly attach or detach, without the need to put your hand in front of the muzzle. The body is made from anodized machined aircraft aluminum. It is IPX7 waterproof to 1m for 30 minutes. The length is 2.51” (6.38 cm), and it weighs 2.39 oz. (67.8g).

To activate the light, the user engages either side of the ambidextrous rear switch. Doing so activates the 500 lumen, 5,000 candella LED. The TLR-7 sub produces a 141m beam. A user-enabled strobe feature is also present. Using one included CR123A lithium battery, run time is 1.5 hours. Twisting the collar around the lens activates and deactivates a safe mode, which prevents users from accidentally turning the light on, and will save batteries.

The light will be available for Glock 43X/48 MOS, SIG P365 and P365XL, and for 1913 short models (with keys for the Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 Subcompact, Beretta Px4 Storm Compact/Subcompact, Springfield Armory Xd-E, and Heckler & Koch Hk45 Subcompact handguns.)
on their website. Make sure you look for more updates posted on their Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram.

[SHOT 2021] XS Sights New Minimalist Night Sights

The Minimalist Night Sights feature a front post with both a tritium dot and a proprietary photoluminescent orange Glow Dot. The idea is that the post will glow brightly in low light, and contrast against the blacked-out rear in bright shooting conditions. The rear notch is blacked-out in an effort to drive the eye to the bright front dot. The serrations and rear-sloping angle aid in keeping light from reflecting back into the shooter’s eyes. The front sight blade is 0.145″ wide, and the rear sight notch is 0.170″ wide.

The sights are made in Texas from U.S. steel bar stock. This is to ensure that not even the biggest butterfingers can drop them into oblivion. They are blued to dissuade rust from building and are resistant to acetone-based cleaning solutions and ultrasonic cleaners. If you find yourself cleaning residue off your front sight frequently, this dot is resistant to buildup and can be easily cleaned with the wipe of a cloth.

If you’re in the market for inexpensive, steel sights to replace your stock irons, keep an eye out for these. The MSRP is $59.99. XS Sights offers a wide variety, from their Big Dot sights to their F8 night sights. All of their offerings can be found on their website. They are also on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

Shadow Systems Releases Full Size Pistol, Ready for Duty

Plano, TX (January, 2021) – Shadow Systems, the American manufacturer of the MR920 and MR920L has released its much-anticipated full size production pistol, the DR920. The Duty-Role 9mm, DR920, was created to be a working gun, fit for law enforcement, military, or anyone who prefers a larger frame and full length top end.

The full size frame of the DR920 incorporates the features found on its compact sibling, including interchangeable backstraps that fundamentally change the grip angle, allowing the pistol to be adjusted to fit the shooter’s natural point of aim. Aggressive grip texture fully wraps the frame and the “recoil control ledge,” a feature which gives the support-hand thumb a place to firmly engage the frame. The extended beavertail and double undercut allow the shooter to get an especially high grip on the pistol, for unmatched controllability. These frame features combine to make the DR920 an exceptionally flat shooter, with very little recoil.

The full length DR920 slides are designed for manipulation under stress, with directional serrations in front and rear, as well as topside serrations on Elite models. The slide has a thin profile at key grasping locations, making handling even easier. Shadow Systems’ patent pending optic cut allows for most brands of red-dot optic to be mounted directly to the slide, for the lowest and strongest multi-footprint optic mount. The optic cut is a standard feature of Elite models and is available as an option on Combat models. The DR920 features a match-grade, spiral-fluted barrel coated in bronze TiCN or black nitride. The barrels are available unthreaded or threaded, for those who want to install a muzzle device.

The DR920 is equipped with a drop-safe, flat-faced aluminum trigger. The trigger has a smooth uptake, a 4.5-5.0 pound trigger pull, and a crisp, tactile reset.

Weighing in at just 23 ounces, the DR920 is one of the more lightweight 17+1-capacity options on the market, making concealed carry possible. Continuing Shadow’s tradition of making pistols that do not require new gear, the DR920 is compatible with most holsters designed to fit a G17.

For Law Enforcement Agencies and Military Units wanting to bring the DR920, or any Shadow Systems pistol, into duty use, Shadow Systems has recently launched a new website, shadowsystemsdefense.com. The new site makes requesting a gun for testing and evaluation as simple as four clicks. Shadow Systems has a dedicated Defense Team who will work directly with departmental decision makers to provide the right duty weapons for officers and servicemembers. Shadow Systems is proud to already have their pistols being used in a duty capacity at departments throughout the U.S.. Later in the year, shadowsystemsdefense.com will also be the home of the upcoming individual first responder purchase program, which will be available through local retailers.

The DR920 is designed and wholly manufactured in the United States, with American labor and materials. The Shadow Systems team comprises former law enforcement officers, members of the military, and competitive shooters. The team’s diverse background contributes to Shadow Systems’ unique design philosophy of building pistols with features based on real-world shooting experience. Every Shadow Systems pistol is designed to be highly reliable and easy to shoot well right out of the box. The reliability of their pistols is supported by a highly engaged customer service team that is often regarded as the most attentive in the industry.

Stoeger’s New Fully-Featured STR-9S Combat Pistol

Stoeger's new Fully Featured STR-9S Combat Pistol

Stoeger introduced the full-size STR-9 back in January 2019. For the virtual SHOT Show 2021, they have announced a fully-featured version called the STR-9S Combat Pistol. Their aim is for the new model to be an all-around solution for everyday carry, home defense or just some fun at the range.

STR-9S Combat Pistol has an overall length of 7.44 inches and weighs in at 1.6 pounds. With a price of $549, it seems quite affordable.

Here’s what Stoeger has to say about it:

Stoeger Expands Pistol Line with Fully Featured STR-9S Combat Pistol
ACCOKEEK, Md. (January, 2021) – Stoeger recently entered the striker-fired, semi-automatic pistol market with the introduction of the STR-9. The latest update to the affordable and durable pistol line features performance upgrades and features to create the STR-9S Combat pistol. The pistol combines high suppressor sights, threaded barrel, flared magwell, optics-ready slide, three backstaps and three magazines, producing an all-around solution for everyday carry, home defense or fun at the range.

The STR-9S Combat features a corrosion-resistant black nitride finish, included interchangeable backstrap grips for a custom fit and 4.17-inch, threaded barrel to attach a suppressor for quiet shooting. The pistol’s accessory rail accepts a wide variety of pistol lights and laser sights for low-light conditions. The reversible magazine release supports right- and left-handed shooting. With an overall length of 7.44 inches and weighing 1.6 pounds, the STR-9S Combat is designed for personal protection without breaking the bank.
Rugged and reliable, the STR-9S Combat’s grip angle is engineered to match the drift-adjustable, raised suppressor fiber-optic sights for true target alignment and combines with a low-bore axis for reduced muzzle rise to quickly reacquire targets for follow-up shots. Aggressive front and back slide serrations provide a firm grasp with or without gloves. A smooth-pulling, crisp trigger houses an internal safety for extra security.

The pistol also features four interchangeable plates for attaching some of the most popular after-market red-dot sights to the top of the slide. These sights provide fast and accurate target acquisition in a wide range of lighting conditions and also allow shooters to focus on the target instead of their iron sights. Available with a 20-round magazine or a 10-round magazine for states with capacity regulations, the STR-9S Combat combines form and function for a variety of shooters at an affordable price.

Stoeger STR-9S Combat

Caliber: 9mm. Action: Striker-fired, semi-auto. Barrel length: 4.17 inches. Overall length: 7.44 inches. Weight: 1.6 pounds. Grip: Three interchangeable backstraps. Safety: Trigger safety. Sights: Raised fiber optic. Finish: Black Nitride. Capacity: 20+1, 10+1.

You can find more information about the new model here: https://www.stoegerindustries.com/

Howa Carbon Fiber Stalker: New Sub 5lb rifle

Howa Carbon Fiber Stalker

THE HOWA MINI ACTION GETS EVEN LIGHTER
New from Legacy Sports International this year is the Howa Carbon Fiber Stalker. The stock itself comes from a collaboration between Howa and Stocky’s, an American gunstock maker. Stocky’s has this to say about their newest line up of ultralight carbon fiber stocks:

Truly the Next Generation of carbon fiber layup – they are stronger, lighter and more precisely machined than ever before. This, the newest carbon fiber stockmaking facility in America, took us more than a year to put together but we finally accomplished it. You can be sure our new CF lineup is formulated with the best-of-the-best American Technology, indeed the world, has to offer.

The Howa Carbon Fiber Stalker looks to be initially available in the Mini Action calibers of .223, 6.5 Grendel, 7.62×39 and .350 Legend. The stated weight of 4lbs 10 oz is significantly lighter than Howa’s previous lightest weight option, which was 5lbs 12.8oz. Pricing has not been stated at this time. Per Howa:

Howa’s M1500 Barrel set in a Carbon Fiber Stock created by Stocky’s.
The rifle weighs in around 4lbs 10oz without a scope! You can find the same 2-Stage H.A.C.T. Trigger, Sub-MOA Guarantee and Lifetime Warranty on Howa Rifles with this new product. The rifle comes with the standard 3 Position Safety with the Mini Action, Short Action and Long Action set up. The available calibers:
Mini Action: .223 Rem, 6.5 Grendel, 7.62×39 and 350 Legend
Short Action: 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08 Rem and .308 Win
Long Action: .270 Win and 6.5 PRC

ALMOST PERFECT
The only negative that I can see is that the new rifle does not have a threaded barrel. Purely this author’s opinion, but if this rifle came with a threaded barrel my cash would be on the barrel for one yesterday. As with many of Legacy Sports International’s Howa line extensions, a threaded version may be not too far off in the future. Combined with a lightweight one-inch diameter scope for day use or a compact thermal optic, this will make a strong contender for a lightweight ranch rifle.

Browning X-POINT DEFENSE Handgun Ammunition

[SHOT 2021] Browning X-POINT DEFENSE Handgun Ammunition (1)

For 2021, Browning Ammunition has a new personal defense handgun ammunition line dubbed X-Point Defense. This ammo is offered in the most popular pistol calibers – .380 Auto, 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 Auto and 10mm Auto. Let’s take a closer look.

[SHOT 2021] Browning X-POINT DEFENSE Handgun Ammunition (1)

The X in the bullets of these cartridges is metallic, an extension of the core, and it works identical to the polymer insert of the Winchester USA Ready Defense bullets preventing the nose cavity from being clogged up by barrier debris or clothing while allowing the fluid media to pass and start the expansion. The following loads will be initially available in the new Browning X-Point Defense ammunition line.
  • .380 ACP (Bullet weight – 95 grains; MV – 1000 fps; ME – 211 ft-lbs)
  • 9mm Luger (Bullet weight – 147 grains; MV – 1000 fps; ME – 326 ft-lbs)
  • .40 S&W (Bullet weight – 180 grains; MV – 1025 fps; ME – 416 ft*lbs)
  • .45 ACP (Bullet weight – 230 grains; MV – 920 fps; ME – 432 ft*lbs)
  • 10mm Auto (Bullet weight – 180 grains; MV – 1225 fps; ME – 599 ft*lbs)
The X-Point bullets probably look familiar to you. That’s because these bullets were also used in Browning’s BXP personal defense handgun ammunition. If you compare the BXP and X-Point Defense data (bullet weights, muzzle velocities, muzzle energies), you’ll see that they are pretty much identical with the only difference being that the BXP line didn’t have a 10mm Auto option. Whether X-Point Defense is the rebranding of BXP ammo and will replace the latter in Browning’s catalog is unknown at the moment of writing this article.

The New Trijicon DI Pistol Night Sights

[Gun Fest 2021] The New Trijicon DI Pistol Night Sights

Trijicon sent down Ryan with a new product for Gun Fest 2021 – the Trijicon DI (Dual Illuminated) pistol night sights. Trijicon already has a pretty extensive line of iron sights available for pistols, many of which feature tritium inserts. The Trijicon DI night sights feature both a dual illuminated front sight and a tritium only rear sight.
[Gun Fest 2021] The New Trijicon DI Pistol Night Sights

The main feature of the Trijicon DI’s is the front sight which makes use of the same dual illumination system as Trijicon’s dual illuminated riflescopes. Furthermore, the fiber piece that is contained within the inside of the front sight is actually threaded into the front sight which is user-replaceable. The fiber piece is held in place by a Torx T-10 screw which can be removed and replaced by the included tool.
[Gun Fest 2021] The New Trijicon DI Pistol Night Sights

The rear sights are more or less the same as the HD and HRD u-notch style rear sights. The significant overhang on the back is to aid in lengthening the sight radius as well as eliminate any reflective light that would distract from a proper sight picture in low light situations.
The full retail price of the set is $150. There will be a total of four different colors of fiber including green, orange, red, and amber. The retainers will also be sold separately and will come in three different colors depending on your customization preferences. The inserts, retainers, and complete sets of night sights will start shipping on February 1st.
  • [Gun Fest 2021] The New Trijicon DI Pistol Night Sights
  • [Gun Fest 2021] The New Trijicon DI Pistol Night Sights
The front sight will also be available for sale as a stand-alone item if you don’t want to purchase the full set and want to just try the front sight. The price for the front sight only will be $99. The sight will be available for Glock, SIG Sauer, Springfield Armory, and Smith & Wesson handguns.

ATF Criminal Branch’s Confusing Evaluation of a Single CAA Industry’s Micro Roni
Ammoland Inc. Posted on January 21, 2021 by John Crump
CAA Micro Roni Clean
ATF Criminal Branch’s Confusing Evaluation of a Single CAA Industry’s Micro Roni
U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- In recently obtained documents, the ATF’s Firearms Technology Criminal Branch argues that in this particular instance a single CAA Industries Micro Roni under evaluation and equipped with an arm brace, was a short-barreled rifle (SBR). Wait, what?

It is important to stop and note that despite the ATF’s Firearms Technology Criminal Branch letter we are about to look at, no charges were ever filed related to this determination in this criminal case investigation. The ATF received the product in question back on 10/9/18.

But this single letter once more highlights the continuing confusion that is created by ATF’s refusal to have hard, measurable, standards for firearms brace devices.
Also, the reader should note the company involved is CAA Industries an Israeli company (not to be confused with CAA USA, a separate company, with no connection to the products seen in this letter) that produces a device that allows the user to insert a pistol into the accessory to increase stability. Some of the CAA Industries’ devices have braces that are attached.

In the original report (embedded below) dated February 5th, 2019, the ATF states that they received a Glock 19 Gen 4 pistol and a CAA Industries Micro Roni Stabilizer device on October 9th, 2018. According to Special Agent and investigator Nate Anderson’s product description, the manufacture made the brace out of stiff rubber material that was one inch wide by two inches long. The brace also had flexible rubber-like straps that extended downward, approximately three inches. The ATF agent noted that the brace resembled a stock and remarked that the device “fits comfortably into one’s shoulder.”
Anderson does note that CAA industries say that the “rubber flaps are designed to fit over the forearm, with the Velcro straps to provide additional security.” He does note that the product allows the user to operate a handgun with increased functionality and stability. According to the ATF document, once the user inserts the pistol into the Micro Roni Stabilizing device, it becomes a weapon itself. He claims by doing so; the user redesigned the gun to fire it from their shoulder.
Because it has a barrel less than 16 inches, the ATF considers it an SBR.
One of the ATF’s issues with the device is the pistol’s weight before the user inserts the weapon into the CAA Industries Micro Roni.
According to the ATF, pistol braces are designed to help disabled shooters manage heavy guns such as pistols based on AR15 lowers or sub guns. The ATF reasons that a pistol is light enough for a disabled shooter to fire the gun with one hand without the need for a brace.
The ATF report states: “The use of a ‘stabilizing brace’ on a standard sized semiautomatic pistol results in the redesign of the pistol to be fired from the shoulder and hence becoming an SBR. The addition of a carbine-type kit to a standard size semiautomatic pistol does not warrant the use of a ‘stabilizing brace,’ as these devices are only added to be used for no other purpose than as a shoulder stock for the pistol.”
Anderson claims that this stance is a long-held belief in the agency. He points to Revenue Ruling 61, where the ATF’s predecessor ruled that Luger and Mauser pistols with stocks were SBRs under the National Firearms Act. In that case, those pistols had stocks and not braces, but the agent is considering the stabilizing brace on the Micro Roni is a stock.
Investigator Anderson also took issue with the actual design of the brace. He claims that it is too close to a stock to be considered a brace. In the now-retracted letter recently submitted to the Federal Registry, the ATF stated that braces based on stocks would be consider shouldering devices. With the letter’s withdrawal, it isn’t clear if Anderson’s reasoning would still be valid.
The ATF also points out that CAA Industries designed the Micro Roni Stabilizing devices based on its Micro Roni carbine conversion device. The Agent notes the only difference is that one has a stock, and one has a brace. He reasons that since the company based the stabilizing device on a carbine design, it will always be a carbine.
Anderson does state that a shorter length of pull doesn’t automatically make an SBR a pistol. He does state length of pull does go into the classification of firearms. We have seen this recently and in other cases, I have recently covered.
The agent’s final objection to the CAA Industries Micro Roni Stabilizing device is that the forward portion of the accessory has a thumb rest!?
He surmises that if CAA Industries did intend the device to help the user fire a pistol with one hand, then there would be no need for the thumb rest.

Many in the gun community argue that these letters, like the one highlighted, are prime examples of the ATF not giving clear guidelines to the industry or the general public. It seems the ATF takes a holistic approach in determining what is and isn’t an SBR. It is a “we know it when we see it” stance that leaves gun owners in legal jeopardy and at the vagaries of government agents.
As of this writing, the ATF has never produced any criminal charges related to CAA Industries Micro Roni and makes no claims that it is banned.
CAA Industries was not aware of the agency having any issues with the Micro Roni or related products and appears to be another victim of ATF’s bureaucratic morass.
This is just one more confirmation that with the continued lack of logical-measurable-standards for firearms braces, even the ATF themselves can not agree on what they are looking at.

It's a good thing I bought the MCK and not the Roni.

New Century Arms AP5 and AP5P Pistols
Century AP5 and AP5P Pistols

Century AP5 and AP5P pistols
The two new pistols being offered are manufactured under contract in the MKE factory in Turkey. For those that are unfamiliar, this is where Zenith firearms were formerly manufactured. The tooling itself is the original 1978 spec, and both pistols will have 100% parts interchangeability with the original MP5.
*Note: The pistols were imported with a receiver block. These will not work with a full-auto trigger pack without modification.
AP5 Pistol
Century Arms AP5 and AP5P Pistols

Century Arms AP5 pistol
The larger of the two pistols is the full-sized AP5. At GunFest 2021 the AP5 (MP5 clone) was sporting a few additional accessories on top of the base pistol. It’s important to note that these guns are imported as pistols to maintain 922r compliance. This doesn’t mean that the guns aren’t ready for accessories. Included with the AP5 are an optics rail and flash hider out of the box.

Century Arms AP5 — JMAC pistol brace adapter and rail
The AP5 on display was sporting a JMAC RSA-MP5 adapter. So if you decide to keep the gun as a pistol, or form 1 it as an SBR, you’ll have plenty of options.
Century Arms AP5 and AP5P Pistols

Century Arms AP5 and AP5P three-lug and flash hider
The barrel on both the AP5 and AP5P is 1/2×28 threaded and features the standard tri-lug pattern for silencer or flash hider attachment. The handguards as seen on both the AP5 and AP5P will be included as well.
