Default Slide won't lock to the rear after last round

I was at the range for a re-qualify and went through several mags of ammo. Every time I fired the last round in a mag, my Gen3 G17 would not lock the slide to the rear. I can manually lock the slide to the rear.

I've fired hundreds of rounds through this G17 without this issue. I also have two .40 Glocks and have never encountered this problem. Does anyone know what the possible cause is?

Sorry if this issue has already been discussed here. I did a forum search and could not find a thread on this topic.

Could be weak ammo, could be a rounded off slide stop lever(if you use it to drop the slide with instead of the over hand method) or could be other things as well but those would be the first two things I'd check out.

Double check your grip and make sure you aren't accudently pressing on the slide stop lever while you are shooting. I have heard of this happening a lot

I take it from your screen name that you work for a Sheriff's Office somewhere. I'd have your armorer give it a look over to see if he can find anything that'd be causing it.

I have also seen them fail to lock back on an empty mag with a barely noticeable hair-line crack in the mag. Since it sounds like it is happening with all your mags I would say that is not the problem. Just a future reference note. Not to keep quoting TNFrank. I agree you should have your Dept. Armorer take a look at it.

^^^ What he said. I was guilty of this a few times. A grip adjustment took care of it.

This may or may not be the cause of your problem, but it is an easy thing to check/adjust.

You could also insert an empty mag(s) into the gun and then rack the slide to see if it locks back.

I don't mind you quoting me, just lets me know the last 37 year of owning firearms hasn't gone to waste.

I gotta agree with the grip issue. Thats the easiest thing to diagnose. I've had that problem with my glock, and for me it was the placement of my strong hand thumb that was the issue. I was slightly resting it on the slide release and as a result, the slide wasn't locking back.

Outside of it being a slight grip issue, as was said before, could be weak ammo, word/damaged slide lock, or possibly slightly damaged mags.

Replace your magazine!! When the last round is fired there is a tab in the magazine that forces the slide stop upwards locking it to the rear. Just a suggestion.
